Hoeing has to be one of the most important tasks you can do in an organic vegetable garden. Weeds growing in between your crops are competing with your vegetables for the valuable nutrients contained in the soil. Weeds also impede air circulation and can harbour diseases which can effect your precious plants. When done regularly when the weeds are still small, hoeing is very easy to do and is something you will find incredibly satisfying. It’s only when weeds are allowed to flourish and develop mature root systems that they are difficult to remove, using a hoe on baby plants is a cinch.
The other reason why we like hoeing so much is not only does it control weeds it also breaks up the upper layers of the soil making it much easier for water and oxygen to filter down through the soil. Here’s the exciting bit: Soil is alive with millions of tiny creatures and micro organisms many of which directly benefit your plants. The microbial life in your soil breaks down nutrients and supplies them directly to the roots of your plants. Hoeing is a bit like giving your soil a massage, it invigorates your vegetable plot.
Hoe on a dry sunny day, you can then leave the weeds on the surface of the soil to decompose.
